Shame that one soundbite, however misguided, has overshadowed what was a good documentary (in fairness, I have enjoyed all of the ITV sports life stories programmes).
You could see why he hasn't got a job. Fantastic payers -and he was one of the best in my lifetime - cannot seem to translate the skills into management. Dalglish was probably amongst the last who were both great players and managers. The game has changed... you need to do your badges, stick the hours in and work your way up. Wenger, Mourinho, Villas Boas, Brendan Rodgers never played to any level.
Barnes came across as bitter, though he has a good grounding in discipline, etc. Modern players don't react to that style of management. Other great players like Ince, Keane, Di Canio have all found that out recently. Another point is Barnes retires 16 years ago now, teenagers aren't going to give a stuff how good a player he was.

He needs to get back into coaching, and work his way up. The fact he was a top class player means nothing, he failed in his first 2 manager jobs, so he has a MANAGERIAL reputation to re-build. Or to build from scratch.
Plus, as someone mentioned earlier, this is the man who he chose as his number 2, not the man speaking, but who it's about...

All have major chips on their shoulders and all are shit at what they think they're good at!
No doubt they will complain that there are not enough black Olympic swimmers next.

I'm not reading what he's said or even this thread but from taking him around on a motorbike like I used to and talking West Ham he was remarkably honest and insightful. He even told me one of the most interesting facts about West Ham, something that lives with me to this day.
He said that West Ham were traditionally a team full of very talented natural footballers. The problem with us was that we didn't train athletically enough and most (but not all) of our training was done with the ball at our feet.
He said so although we had some great footballers, only 3 of them on average were properly pumped up for the game. You couldn't tell beforehand who those players would be on the day but it would become extremely apparent within 5-10 minutes of the game.
All you had to do was kick those players out of the game and you'd usually leave Upton Park with all the points. I must say it rang very true.
I also asked him why he committed to come and play for us then backed out at the last moment. He again was very honest and said that Kenny Dalgliesh was his best friend in football and he pleaded with him to go and work with him at Newcastle (was it Newcastle? I can't be bothered to look it up). He said that he loved KD and relished the prospect of playing for him and he had no real London links anyway.
Again he was brutally honest about realising he'd taken the wrong job at Celtic and that the fans didn't want him there. Said he took dog's abuse almost from day one and it knocked his confidence in his ability to manage. He said he felt most sorry about signing Berkovich from us as the fans just associated him with Barnes and never gave him a chance despite being a fantastic player.
I found him a very nice, personable and impressive bloke.

That's the society we live in these days, if a white person is terrible at their job they can be sacked and that's it.
If a black person is terrible at their job and you sack them it's because you are a racist and they will sue the arse off you.
That's why black people find it hard to get jobs, not because they aren't any good but simply because it carries a lot of baggage employing them.
